One nickname. One community. One lasting connection.
Geodude equals Frito.
Simple, but significant.
Over the last few years on stream, Frito has grown into something bigger for the community, though very few people know the full story until now. Frito is more than just a shiny Geodude, Graveler, or Golem. Frito represents connection.
The story of Frito begins with Joshua Graham, the cousin of my moderator, Pxtchwork.exe.
Josh was also known to his friends by his online moniker, TheFritoB, and he absolutely loved the Geodude line. He may not have been active in our community, but he and Pxtch were especially close. Unfortunately, Josh lost his battle with cancer, which progressed very rapidly, on June 27, 2024.
In September 2024, I began a Shiny Living Dex quest in Pokémon Legends: Arceus. A Shiny Living Dex requires capturing every shiny Pokémon. You do not just need a shiny Bulbasaur that evolves into a shiny Venusaur, for example. You need Bulbasaur, Ivysaur, and Venusaur individually for the line to be considered complete.
I found my first shiny for the Shiny Living Dex in October 2024, and it happened to be a Geodude. Grimm’sStories coincidentally suggested the nickname “Frito,” since the coloration of shiny Geodude resembled a Frito chip. After Grimm’s suggestion, Pxtch and others echoed the idea. Unaware of any significance behind the name, and oblivious to Josh, I chose to nickname the shiny Geodude “Darmani.”
That seemingly small decision created a pattern within the community. Because I did not name that first shiny Geodude Frito, the nickname was suggested every time I found another one. After catching around three shiny Geodude, I finally used the name for the first time, giving it to a Graveler on November 7, 2024.
Still unaware of its deeper meaning, I found another shiny Graveler on November 14 and was met with overwhelming suggestions from the community to name it Frito. Joking that not every Geodude, Graveler, or Golem could share the same name, I instead nicknamed it “Fritwo” to avoid duplication.
I had no idea what that name truly meant yet.
As my Shiny Living Dex challenge continued, I kept encountering shiny Geodude, and like clockwork, the community would suggest the nickname “Frito.” Eventually, I leaned into it, giving in to the running joke and enthusiastically greeting every wild shiny Geodude by the name the community had embraced.
It was around this point that Pxtch explained the significance of Frito to me. They told me they were happy to see it become so popular within the community because it reminded them of their cousin.
With the release of the Nintendo Switch 2, I began a Shiny Badge Quest in Pokémon Violet as a celebration. As I progressed through the game, catching shiny Pokémon that were unavailable in Pokémon Legends: Arceus, the community began to express how much they missed the familiarity of Frito on our streams.
With that continued support, on July 8, 2025, I surprised the community by announcing the day would be known as Frito Day, and we would not rest until we found a shiny Geodude in Pokémon Violet.
Sure enough, we found Frito, a shiny Geodude in Pokémon Violet, on July 8, 2025.
Later that day, I received a message from Pxtch asking if I somehow knew that July 8 was Josh’s birthday. At that point, the coincidences were too strong and too frequent to ignore. “Frito” was no longer just a nickname. It had become something more—a connection that brought the community together. Every shiny Geodude wasn’t just a moment, it was a reminder of that connection.
This year, we celebrate Frito Day as a community, setting out to find as many shiny Geodude as possible. Now that you know the significance of Frito, I ask that on July 8 you join me in catching at least one shiny Geodude, Graveler, or Golem and naming it Frito.
Because Geodude equals Frito.
